Make sure that your house is safe from medicines, cleaners, antifreeze and poisons before bringing your new puppy home.

You are going to be the most important person in your puppies life. So remember puppies are like babies, you have to be gentle and understanding with them. Never hit your puppy. Just correct your puppy when catching it in the act of doing something wrong. Never scold it for doing something it did awhile ago. It will have no idea of what it is for and will think that you are mad at it for no reason.

Place the puppies food dish in the spot where it will be kept at all times to set a routine. If your puppy has trouble eating, try moistening the food with water. Make sure you choose a puppy food that has high nutrition and protein. It is very important for the first year which kind of food you give your puppy because the better nutrition they receive, depends on how your puppy grows.

If you ever change your puppies food, it should be a gradual process. Start by adding a small amount of new food with their current food, gradually increasing the new food amount and decreasing their current food amount each time you feed. Continue this for at least one week.

Take your puppy for a vet visit as soon as possible (around 9 weeks old), they will know exactly when your puppy needs its next vaccinations and future checkups.

If you set your puppy on a routine schedule, it helps with the house training process. Give food and water around the same time everyday. Take it to the same place every time to use the bathroom. Take it out when it wakes up, after eating, when it starts looking around and sniffing for a place to go and before bed time.

When you want to train your puppy to so something, praise it with treats. But remember, too many treats can make your puppy overweight.

The way your puppy develops into an adult depends a great deal on how it is guided through its early months, by you. The two most important words to remember throughout the life of any dog, puppy or adult, are consistency and fairness.

The more love and attention you give to your puppy, the more love it will give back to you!
